"Currents"

Dance Enthusiast / Audience Review - (Ailey Citigroup Theater - November 10th & 11th 2018)

Currents choreographed by Ari Mayzick, was performed at the Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater. I went to view ARIM Dance, the up and coming company. Currents astounded me because of the stamina and technique required to perform the piece. The choreography was extremely complex and created a feeling of vigorous ocean currents. The costumes only enhanced this feeling because they represented the colors of the sea, - Greens, Blues and Indigo. It seems like the dance was made to have no dancer stand out, but to have the group shine as one, which they did. They worked wonderfully as one unit. The music itself was wonderful, very classical and it was neat to see classical music with the Martha Graham technique. Everything worked together nicely. I would love to see them again.

"Mimic"

EMAV Review by: Lisa G. Bennett (UNLV - Judy Bayley Theater - March 1st & 2nd 2019)

Mimic is an enigmatic piece choreographed by artist-in-residence Ari Mayzick, set to the atmospheric music of Kronos Quartet and The Glitch Mob. Full of relentless, frenetic energy, the work is complex and demanding on performers. Dancers appear in individual spotlights wearing head-to-toe black, with bright red hands that frame the body and highlight a self-embrace. In the dark lighting they are like creepy ninjas or creatures struggling to emerge from the primordial soup, and their movement is athletic and jazzy and often in unison.

"Yoke"

EMAV Review by: Lisa G. Bennett (UNLV - Judy Bayley Theater - March 1st & 2nd 2019)

Yoke choreographed by Ari Mayzick to the music of Max Richter and danced by Mayzick and Octave Parfait - who both dance for the Martha Graham Dance Company - is a mournful modern piece that proves to be the most complete and fulfilling work in the show. It depicts two individuals in a struggle that feels like an evolution of sorts, who are on different paths with different movements that are minimalist and sustained, and that repeat, oppose, and echo each other. It's a powerful moment when they come together in an embrace of discovery in the end.
